Fixing wind-damaged roofs in Oklahoma City

Wind does not have to tear a shingle off to ruin it. A tab that lifts and folds back once has lost its seal and will go in the next storm. We cover what is open, find every creased and unsealed tab, and rebuild the courses so they hold.

Quick answer

Wind damage roof repair in Oklahoma City usually covers more than the shingles lying in the yard. Every tab that lifted in a gust lost its adhesive bond, and a creased tab cracks along the fold. We cover open spots, replace missing shingles, reseal or replace lifted tabs and install new ridge cap.

The job

Why a wind repair covers more than the bare spots

Wind-lifted shingle tabs on a brick ranch roof

Shingles are held by nails and by an adhesive strip that bonds each course to the one below. Strong wind gets under an edge, breaks that bond and flaps the tab. Some tabs tear away. Many fold back, crease and settle down again, looking almost normal from the street.

A tab that lost its seal goes first in the next storm, and a creased one lets water run back to the nail line. So we lift-test tabs across the windward slopes, not only around the missing pieces, and mark every one that moves freely.

The repair follows the testing: replacement shingles nailed and sealed in place, hand-sealing for intact but unsealed tabs, and new ridge cap where the top course blew off.

Warning signs

What wind damage looks like from the yard

  • Shingles in the yardOne shingle on the lawn means a course is open and the tabs beside it are likely unsealed.
  • Thin lines across tabsA crease shows where a tab folded back. From the ground it looks like a shadow.
  • Exposed felt patchesUnderlayment showing means a shingle is gone and rain can reach the nails.
  • Gaps along the peakMissing ridge cap leaves the ridge vent open to rain.
  • A new top-floor ceiling stainA fresh stain after a windy storm often leads back to an open course.
What this covers

Wind damage shows up in three patterns, each starting at a different spot on the roof.

Missing Shingles

Missing shingles leave the underlayment or bare deck exposed, and the nails from the course above are now open to rain. If rain is coming, we tarp first, then install new shingles matched to the exposure and nailing pattern of the old roof. Where several pieces blew off one course, we test the adhesive strips along the rest of that course, since they likely let go in the same gust.

HomeAdvisor puts post-storm and hail roof repairs at an average of $12,300.

Lifted and Creased Tabs

Lift testing a shingle tab beside missing shingles

A creased tab has a straight line across it where it folded back in the wind. The fiberglass mat is broken along that line, so the crack widens each summer and water finds the nails below. Creased tabs get replaced. Tabs that lifted without folding may only need hand-sealing with roofing cement, which we decide tab by tab after a lift test rather than gluing a whole slope on guesswork.

Blown-Off Ridge Cap

Installing new ridge cap along a roof peak

Ridge cap sits at the most exposed spot on the roof, and wind often strips it first. Once it is gone, the ridge vent opening or the top edge of the deck is open to rain. We install new ridge cap with nails long enough to reach solid wood, and replace the ridge vent if the wind bent or cracked it. On older roofs, we also check the course just below the ridge.

Oklahoma City notes

Wind events on the west side of the metro

Roof wind damage here can come from storms people barely remember. On February 26, 2023, an EF1 tornado with 105 to 110 mph winds crossed western Oklahoma City, from about 4 miles east-northeast of Mustang to 2 miles east-southeast of Bethany, in the middle of winter. Stronger gusts are on record: on May 24, 2011, the Oklahoma Mesonet site near El Reno logged a 151 mph gust, the highest the network has measured. Wind far below either number peels tabs and strips ridge cap.

Scope

What a complete wind repair should include

  • Lift tests on every windward slope, not only around missing shingles
  • Creased tabs replaced, not glued flat
  • Hand-sealing for intact tabs that lost their bond
  • Replacement shingles nailed to the original pattern
  • Ridge cap nailed into solid wood
  • An attic check for water that already got in

Cost

Cost factors for wind damage roof repair

A few missing shingles is a small job. Unsealed tabs on every slope is not. These details set the price.

  • Open courses. Each one needs matching shingles, new nails and sealing.
  • Unsealed tabs. Hand-sealing many tabs adds labor even where nothing is missing.
  • Ridge length. Ridge cap is priced by the run, so long, cut-up ridges cost more.
  • Shingle match. Discontinued colors can mean replacing a full slope.
  • Water that got in. Wet decking or ceilings add drying and interior repair.
